What is BD Technology Leadership Development Program?

The Technology Leadership Development Program’s (TLDP) vision is to develop future leaders in BD’s R&D organization by providing TLDP associates with broad and deep technical assignments across BD. The program consists of three successively more challenging assignments that can span multiple businesses and / or locations within the Company. These assignments are designed to strengthen technical depth and leadership skills.

A personalized and dynamic career path is sculpted for each TLDP associate with the influence of senior R&D leaders and your personal skills and interests.

As an associate in one of BD’s rotational programs, you will have the opportunity early in your career to work on challenging and meaningful assignments that directly impact the organization and its work addressing some of the world’s most compelling health problems. Diverse rotations, combined with coaching and development, enable associates to build new skills and explore multiple career paths. Meet Rob Swanda

Rob Swanda knows a lot about biological science. But what he did not know for sure was what company might be a great match for him after graduating from Cornell University with a Ph.D. in biochemistry. Meet Nicole Estrich

Nicole holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, and a Master’s degree and a PhD in Materials Science – both from North Carolina State University. A passion for math at a young age spurred her to think about how she could turn her love of math into a career, which it certainly has. Nicole appreciates the career journey she’s forged so far with BD because of her role as a systems engineer and manager, which allows her to serve a central role in the product development process. Who is eligible for TLDP?

We provide graduates and student interns with the opportunity to be fully immersed in the life-changing work we do every day.

To join TLDP, you must meet the following qualifications:

Outstanding Ph.D. graduates or anticipated defense within 1 year of application date

With technical depth in engineering, technology, or science fields, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, computer science, data science and related fields.

Significant demonstrated leadership experience.

Leadership may span realms including but not limited to: technical, academic, entrepreneurial, organizational, and personal.

Early-stage career

No more than 3 years of STEM industry or academic experience outside the pursuit of a degree.

Willingness to relocate

Willingness and ability to relocate to different geographic locations* for at least two out of the three assignments.
*BD’s TLDP Program is unable to provide visa sponsorship. In order to qualify for this position, you must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship for employment visa status by BD for the duration of this program, which is anticipated to be 5-6 years.

How does it work?

You will participate in custom-designed rotational assignments guided by participant’s input, resulting in a fluid, flexible, and dynamic career development experience.

The assignments are focused on developing each participant’s domain expertise, leadership abilities, cross-functional skills, and business acumen.

 The assignments are spanning multiple locations and BD businesses within key research and development facilities such as Franklin Lakes, NJ; Sparks, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; San Diego, CA; San Jose, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; Vernon Hills, IL; Tempe, AZ; Warwick, RI; and Covington, GA.

 Each assignment builds on the previous, with increasing technical complexity and leadership responsibilities.

 Potential for career growth in technology-based roles earned by: quickly learning the business, quality leadership, and strong technological skills.

Examples of assignments include:

Design and development

of product components in drug delivery systems or high-tech diagnostic devices.

Contributing to the development

of novel materials technology that enables invention of new medical devices or therapies.

Software development

for new technologies that enable better and faster disease diagnosis.

How to Apply?

The proposal selection process takes a few months, so you should apply 6 months to one year before your intended start date. Yes, you can apply before your PhD defense!

FAQ

Q: Do I get paid like an intern?

A: No. TLDPs are paid full-time employees hired at the Senior Engineer/Scientist level.

Q: How much of a say do I get in where I go?

A: A lot! With input from BD leaders, you craft your own career path based on your skills and interest.

Q: What if I have a family?

A: Though relocation is required, many TLDP associates have a partner and/or kids. BD provides full relocation support and will work with you to minimize disruption to your family both personally and professionally.
