The R&D team is seeking an exceptionally talented and passionate individual to help us identify and implement materials science and engineering driven innovative solutions to address current and future health care needs. Within BD Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) Research & Development, the Senior Materials Scientist will be part of the Materials Science team in Franklin Lakes NJ, reporting to the Associate Director, Materials Science and will be responsible for supporting new materials innovations, new product development, and sustaining engineering projects.

The preferred candidate will have strong technical skills, excellent written and oral skills, and leadership abilities. This candidate should possess a strong capability to interpret and ensure compliance with all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, quality policies, best practices, and procedures through appropriate communication. The role requires strong collaboration with cross-functional teams, including Platform Product R&D, Regulatory Affairs, and Manufacturing, to deliver safe, effective, and innovative medical devices. The successful candidate will be an innovative thinker, have deep understanding of polymer structure, morphology, processing and properties and have experience or knowledge in the transfer of materials technology to the release of products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of materials and/or characterization projects through materials science and engineering analyses, Design of Experiments (DOEs), Protocols/Methods, and best practices to support business innovation and product development work.

  • Keep abreast of potential new technologies to enable the design of new materials and capabilities.

  • Design, develop, and improve materials related to BD products.

  • Leverage existing materials technologies to advance our core businesses while supporting the development of new products and platforms. 

  • Collaborate in the creation, evaluation, and assessment of competitive products, processes, technology, and trends.

  • Define material properties and requirements in order to meet product requirements

  • Assist in the transfer of new technologies from R&D to manufacturing

  • Utilization of the scientific method to identify problems or potential risks and deliver quick, effective solutions to enable projects to meet their timing and deliverables

  • Actively seek training to improve skills and teach/promote/reward new learning within the organization

  • Hold and encourage frequent formal and informal communication within the team.

  • Provide directions for junior engineers (when appropriate) and technicians

  • Work independently and within a multifunctional team

  • Ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through appropriate communication, training and education of sound quality assurance principles.

Qualifications:

At minimum a B.Sc. Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fields with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or, M.Sc. degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or, PhD Degree. Advanced degrees are preferred.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Quickly learns and actively seeks out learnings to increase knowledge in technical competency areas.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Deep understanding of technical principles and their applications in materials and/ or characterization technologies. Demonstrated understanding of materials structure-property relationship.

  • Experience in materials science and engineering within medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or related regulated industry is preferred.

  • Experience with laboratory techniques in materials characterization with demonstrated skills in adapting procedures to meet specific objectives and solve problems.

  • Ability to work within multifunctional teams and work cross-functionally. Effective communicator and collaborator across functions and levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new scientific and technological approaches.

  • Experience with statistical analysis and demonstrated ability to frequently use statistical analysis to support work.

  • Experience with scale-up and transfer of materials technologies to manufacturing

  • Test protocol generation, execution, and reporting.

  • Basic knowledge of project management for new product development.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • An understanding of design control processes.

  • Understands regulatory and quality requirements and external Regulations (ISO, FDA, OSHA, ASTM).
