As a member of the BD Pharmaceutical Advanced Drug Delivery Systems (ADDS) business, you will have the unique opportunity to play a vital role in the rapid scale-up of an exciting new business platform that will be a key contributor to BD’s future growth. This team member should share our passion for excellence and innovation while actively building on their motivation to design and build this family of self-administered injection products from the ground up.

The new hire will join a New Product Development team and will be responsible for leading and/or participating in the design and development activities from concept all the way through commercial launch of the product with a focus on technical activities including designing, optimizing, analyzing, prototyping, testing and validating products of moderate scope/complexity.

Job Duties include:

  • Provide solid technical engineering skill.

  • Lead and/or contribute to the completion of specific programs and projects in a design control environment. 

  • Set and adjust priorities for self and contribute to team planning.

  • Ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through appropriate communication, training, and education of sound quality assurance principles.

  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedure.

Project Responsibilities:

  • Product development: Plan, implement, monitor and deliver designated tasks and deliverables.  Responsible for solving technical problems.  Accountable for success of assigned tasks and deliverables.  Participate in periodic design reviews of projects.

  • Technology transfer: Participate in implementation of transition from research to development to manufacturing.

  • Process effectiveness: Ensure appropriate processes are followed for effective and timely engagement of related parties in completion of designated project activities.

  • Innovation: Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.  Solutions are imaginative, thorough, and practical.

  • Customer focus: Execute an understanding of customer needs and processes to ensure relevant and innovative product development solutions.

  • Continuous learning: Actively seek training to improve skills.  Ensure technical lessons are reviewed, learned, and disseminated.  Actively teach and promote learning.

Scope

  • Works under general direction.  Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.

  • Works with other R&D team members, as well as cross-functional team members to achieve goals.

  • Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues with specific projects.

Leadership

  • Demonstrate strong and clear accountability for the successful and timely completion of designated tasks.

  • Hold and encourage frequent formal and informal communication within the team and the rest of the organization to ensure dissemination of important information.

  • Assess people and situations and act accordingly.  Demonstrate persuasion and timing skills.  Remain open to be persuaded when appropriate.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Materials Science, or Biomedical Engineer or closely released disciplines preferred

  • Minimum 3 years relevant medical device product design & development experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience

  • Experience with developing products or implementing product changes through a structured, phase-gated, product development process

  • Experience identifying (through a variety of methods, including observation and solicitation), articulating, and prioritizing customer needs and requirements

  • Demonstrated understanding of product development considerations for tightly controlled, high-volume manufacturing processes

  • Demonstrated experience with all phases of the Design Control process

  • Demonstrated understanding of the requirements management process, with demonstrated experience in design verification strategy and implementation

  • Demonstrated experience in a technical role on a cross-functional product development team, including technical leadership of small scope R&D workstreams

  • Excellent understanding of medical device product development risk management methodologies

  • Proficiency with statistical data analysis techniques and Design for Six Sigma methodologies

  • Strong Team orientation with excellent interpersonal skills, influence skills, and communication skills

Preferred Experience:

  • ME/MS in Mechanical, Materials Science, or Biomedical Engineering or closely related disciplines a plus

  • CSWP Certified SolidWorks Professional a plus

  • Clear understanding of manufacturing process validation including FAI/FAT, development and IQ/OQ/PQ

  • Understanding of IP considerations

  • Intellectual curiosity coupled with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively communicate (verbal & written) concepts

  • Demonstrated versatility and learning agility

  • Proficiency in tolerance stack-up analysis involving multiple components

  • Design and execution of user studies in support of product requirement specification development.

  • Experience with designing for high-volume manufacturing methods such as plastic injection molding and automated assembly/packaging processes.

  • Experience with design optimization for multi-component mechanical assemblies or systems involving injection molded and compression molded components.

  • Clear understanding of fixture design including basic machining considerations and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA).

  • Analytical Modeling / FEA
