Job Description Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineering Functional Manager is a critical leadership role within the Pharmacy Automation Engineering organization. This position is responsible for the functional leadership, technical excellence, and capability development of the Mechanical Engineering team supporting both new product development (NPD) and sustaining engineering initiatives.

Responsibilities

Functional & Technical Leadership

  • Lead the Mechanical Engineering function supporting BD’s Pharmacy Automation business across multiple NPD and sustaining programs.

  • Establish and maintain mechanical engineering standards, best practices, and design processes for complex electromechanical systems.

  • Serve as a senior mechanical technical authority across architecture, mechanisms, structures, materials, and manufacturability.

  • Collaborate closely with the Mechanical Engineering Functional Manager in the EU to build and lead a unified, global Pharmacy Automation mechanical engineering organization, aligning standards, processes, skill development, and technical governance across regions.

  • Drive global resource fungibility by harmonizing tools, methodologies, workflows, and engineering practices, enabling seamless talent sharing and consistent execution quality across U.S. and EU teams.

  • Provide technical leadership and review for external engineering partners.

Matrixed Program Execution Support

  • Partner with Hardware Delivery Leads to ensure ME resources are optimally allocated to programs based on skills, priorities, and business needs.

  • Support Delivery Leads with technical expertise, functional oversight, and escalation pathways to ensure high quality, on-time hardware delivery.‑quality, on‑time hardware delivery.

  • Ensure clarity of scope, priorities, and tradeoffs.

  • Participate in design reviews with objective, risk-based assessments.

  • Promote consistency in mechanical architecture across programs.

Quality, Testing & Statistical Rigor

  • Lead development of robust verification and validation strategies.

  • Apply statistical modeling and data-driven methods to influence system design and test decisions.

  • Develop appropriate test methods to ensure product quality matches requirements.

  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions.

People & Capability Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical engineers across multiple experience levels, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.

  • Own talent development, succession planning, and skills roadmaps aligned to current products and required future capabilities.

  • Provide coaching and performance management; ensure consistent application of engineering best practices across all programs.

  • Build organizational capability by evaluating skill gaps, hiring strategically, and strengthening cross disciplinary collaboration.‑disciplinary collaboration.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure consistent structured development processes.

  • Maintain effective functional governance and reviews.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • 15+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience including 5+ years of leadership/management in a complex electromechanical product development environment.

  • Experience with automation systems and mid-tier manufacturing.

  • Strong background in statistical analysis and test method development.

  • Familiarity with DOE, reliability analysis, FEA, and advanced modeling practices.

  • Proven ability to lead in a matrixed organization.

  • Experience managing external engineering partners.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Willingness to travel as required.

Preferred:

  • Experience with regulated products.
